Hercules and Hylas were partners in Greek mythology, often overlooked in modern depiction of Hercules and his lovers. Hercules killed Hylas' father in a conflict, and then he "hired" Hylas as his squire - yes, the Ancient World had different standards than today. Through their journeys, they fall in love. As part of the crew of the Argonauts, Hercules and Hylas are separated by nymphs. All accounts state Hylas was kidnapped by the nymphs, but differ as to the outcome. Hercules searched for Hylas never to find him. Some myths claim a happy ending stating the nymphs fell in love with him and married him. Others say Hercules couldn't find Hylas because the nymphs who kidnapped him drowned him so Hercules could not hear Hylas' screams.
